Graduate Program Application Procedure

Application Instructions

Detailed application instructions for MSU's Graduate Program in Physics and Astronomy are available as a web page

If you are interested in an Astronomy PhD we recommend you see their web page.

Your application will be reviewed in a holistic manner taking in account all documents provided.  There is no required minimum physics GRE score and it is optional for students applying to the Astronomy PhD degree.

Deadline for all applications to be submitted is January 1, 2021, however if you want to be considered for a University fellowship (for more information see below) please submit your application by December 15, 2020.  Please have letters of reference uploaded to your application as soon as possible, but no later than January 1, 2021.  Applications that are submitted after January 1st may still be considered for admission, but will be ineligible for certain fellowships.

For fall entry, we start inviting domestic students for a visit and interview in January. We start making offers in February and continue until our positions are filled, which is usually in April (we enter about 25 students each fall)

The department does not process admissions to students during the spring or summer semesters.  Please consider applying for fall.

Waiver Information

Are you a domestic student seeking an application fee waiver with a GPA of 3.0 or higher?  There are NO waivers for international students.

Fellowship Information

There are a variety of fellowships available for domestic students. The deadline for some of these is quite early (e.g., some are as early as Jan. 3rd) and they are competitive across the College of Natural Science and the University. We will submit your application for these fellowships as soon as it is complete and provided it is sufficiently strong.  For more information about fellowships click here.
