REU Summer Internship Program

Each summer, the MSU Department of Physics and Astronomy and its research groups offer 10-week internships for up to 10 undergraduate students. The program is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Over the course of these ten weeks, students work with MSU faculty members in experimental, theoretical, and/or computational research in one of these areas:

  • Accelerator Physics
  • Astrophysics
  • Biophysics
  • Condensed Matter Physics
  • Nanoscience
  • Nuclear Physics
  • Particle Physics
  • Physics Educations

Every attempt is made to pair up each student with the professor and project of their choice.

Undergraduate students, preferably sophomores or juniors, who have completed introductory physics courses and have completed or are taking an advanced physics course, are encouraged to apply. The REU program requires participants to be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or permanent residents.

 REU 2023

The program includes a weekly series of professional and career development workshops and organized social activities and excursions; these provide an informal atmosphere where students can get to know each other and a range of Physics-Astronomy faculty and staff. At the end of the program, students will present their research results as a poster and also submit a "practice" NSF Graduate Fellowship application. All students are housed in the same building.

Pending NSF funding, the dates for the 2026 program will be May 26th through July 31st.

Students will receive a stipend of $7000 plus full room and board. In addition, travel expenses will be partially reimbursed to a maximum of $600.

The application review will begin on Friday, April 10th. Successful applicants will be requested to respond to the offer as soon as possible. The process will continue until the cohort is complete.

Applications are available HERE along with detailed instructions for the application procedure.
