Fellowships and Endowments for Graduate Students

The following fellowships/endowments pertain to students in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Calls for (self)nominations are made through Graduate Students and/or Faculty mailing list. The Department is very thankful to the benefactors of these endowments and the opportunities they create for our graduate students. People can make donations in support of these fellowships here

• Cowen Family Fellowship: Aimed at attracting the best graduate students to work with the faculty member(s) recognized as the Jerry Cowen Endowed Chair. In the event the Jerry Cowen Endowed Chair position(s) are vacant or the chair holders(s) have sufficient research support to cover the cost of their graduate students, the Department of Physics may use the Expendable Amounts from the endowment to support outstanding graduate students who would work with other faculty members in Physics.
• Crawley Family Fund: Aimed at students in the Department who pursue internships in nuclear energy institutions (e.g. university or national laboratory in the US or overseas). If no qualified applicants are available in this research area, funds may be used for a research internship for students studying climate change.  
• Galonsky International Travel Award: aimed at supporting overseas scientific experiences that are extensive in duration and impact. Specifically, the award will provide support for visits of graduate students to overseas collaborators with a specific preference for longer duration visits, ideally of a month or more, minimally of two weeks. 
• Gelbke Graduate Research Award: Awarded to a graduate student for seminar presentation with a topic that is different from their ongoing graduate student thesis topics. Students competing for the award will select a topic, research the literature and prepare a formal public presentation of 45 minute duration that will be judged by the award recipient selection committee.
• Herbert T. Graham Scholarships: aimed at students with a demonstrated financial need. 
• Jenny H. and Otto F. Krauss Fellowship for students in Condensed Matter Physics: aimed at supporting a deserving graduate student with a high grade point average who is seeking an advanced degree in Condensed Matter Physics.  
• Jenny H. and Otto F. Krauss Fellowship for students in High Energy Physics: aimed at supporting a deserving graduate student with a high grade point average who is seeking an advanced degree in High Energy Physics.  
• Peter A. Schroeder Physics Fellowship – aimed at a M.S. or Ph.D. student of the Department of Physics and Astronomy who is a US citizen or permanent resident majoring in condensed matter physics. Preference is for students inclined to work in industry, not academia.
